The Star Achiever's Chapter, "Don't Let Your Child Fall Through the Crack" student/parent workshops
are held monthly and are geared toward:
- Helping parents set academic
guidelines to help their student to be more accountable and successful;
- Checking students' academic records
for meeting graduation requirements as well as college requirements;
- Keeping parents informed about the
changes in the school system which might impact their student's school and
their student in the classroom;
- Targeting and assisting academic
needs in math, and writing for all students in test preparation for
standardized testing.
Another component of the workshops
addresses literacy in elementary and middle grade students. The teaching
staff models reading for both parent and student, including sharing tips with parents in checking for student's
comprehension of the reading passage.
Over the years, the Chapter has seen an increased
interest in the workshops from both students and parents as shown by an increase
in their attendance. Scores on standardized testing are slowing rising
from workshop participants. Some students are given free books to choose
from at each workshop, there has also been an increase in leisure time reading
as denoted by parents.
As the Chapter
begins its 5th season of student/parent workshops, there is an even greater need
for the workshop sessions. Drastic budget cuts have left public school
systems in dire need of more parental support, school volunteers, as well as
community based programs such as the workshops being offered by Star Achievers.
Please mark the
following dates for the workshops and invite other families to join us in our
