Upcoming Events . . .
The Star Achiever's Chapter, "Don't Let Your Child Fall Through the Crack" student/parent workshops are held monthly and are geared toward:
- Helping parents set academic guidelines to help prepare their beginning high school student for the high school exit exams;
- Checking students' academic records for meeting graduation other requirements;
- Assisting parents and graduating seniors to successfully complete college applications and academic scholarships;
- Targeting and assisting academic needs in math and writing for all students in test preparation for standardized testing.
Also, there is a component of the workshops that addresses literacy in elementary and middle grade students. The teachers model reading for both parent and student including sharing guidelines for the parent in checking for student's comprehension of the reading passage. The Chapter has seen an increased interest in the workshops from both student and parent as shown by an increase in their attendance. This is due largely to allowing students the opportunity to select a new library book of their choice at each session students K-8th attend. At each workshop, student volunteers briefly share highlights from their book, another incentive for reading!
